Your Seed Phrase Backup, Your Gold, Your Home Office. Each Needs Something Different.

And most people have at least one of them wrong.

A standard fire safe will protect your paper seed phrase backup. It will also destroy your hardware wallet. Your precious metals may have crossed the TL threshold without you knowing it. And your home office policy may not cover what you think it does. We serve all three of these situations in the Bay Area every week. Here is the spec for each one.

01The Direct Answer

Three Situations. Three Different Protection Specs.

If you hold cryptocurrency, your paper seed phrase backup needs Class 350 fire protection, the same class that protects paper documents. Your hardware wallet is an electronic device; it needs Class 125. If you hold gold and silver, the right protection tier depends on the value of your holdings, and above certain thresholds, a residential safe is not the right answer. If you run a home office, the business assets you keep there may trigger commercial coverage requirements your residential policy does not meet.

No safe dealer in the country has written this guide for any of these three buyer situations. We’ve been serving Bay Area crypto holders, precious metals investors, and home office professionals across Silicon Valley, the Peninsula, and the East Bay long enough to know exactly what each one needs.

02Three Buyer Situations

Which Situation Is Yours?

Read the card that matches your situation. Each one has a specific protection spec and a route to the deeper guide.

Persona 1

Cryptocurrency and Seed Phrase Storage

Bay Area / Silicon Valley / Peninsula — primary market for this persona
What Most People Assume

Any fire-rated safe protects a seed phrase backup because seed phrases are written on paper.

What Actually Matters

That’s half right. A Class 350 fire safe protects the paper backup at standard fire conditions. But your hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor, and similar devices) is an electronic device. It fails at 125 degrees Fahrenheit, which is well below what a Class 350 safe will reach. If you store both in the same Class 350 safe and a fire reaches it, your paper backup survives, and your hardware wallet does not.

Protection Specification

Paper seed phrase backup: Class 350 fire-rated document safe. Hardware wallet storage: Class 125 media-rated safe, or store the hardware wallet in a separate, cooler location and rely on the paper backup as your recovery mechanism. Both the paper backup and the hardware wallet require independent burglary protection.

Persona 2

Precious Metals and Physical Asset Storage

Bay Area / Silicon Valley / East Bay / Sacramento — high-density metals holder market
What Most People Assume

A standard residential safe is adequate for gold and silver at any holdings value.

What Actually Matters

A standard residential safe rated RSC I will resist a 5-minute hand-tool attack. An organized crew in the Bay Area will spend more than 5 minutes on a safe they know contains $50,000 or more in metals. Above certain holding values, the protection calculus changes. TL-15 and TL-30 rated safes exist precisely for this threat profile: they are independently tested against power tools for 15 and 30 minutes, respectively. Bank branch consolidation has reduced safe deposit box availability by an estimated 20% since 2017. Many metals investors are actively looking for home storage alternatives.

Protection Specification

Under $25,000 in holdings: quality RSC I or RSC II residential safe with proper anchoring. $25,000 to $100,000: RSC II minimum, TL-15 strongly considered. Above $100,000: TL-15 to TL-30 depending on insurance carrier requirements and threat environment. Bay Area: Confirm with your carrier before purchase; Bay Area carriers are among the strictest in the US on residential safe rating requirements.

Persona 3

Home Office and Business Asset Storage

Bay Area / Silicon Valley / San Jose — high-density home office professional market
What Most People Assume

A residential insurance policy covers everything in the home, including business assets in a home office.

What Actually Matters

Residential policies are written for household contents. Business assets, computers, IP, client files, and professional equipment, held in a home office, may fall under commercial coverage, not residential. Bay Area insurance carriers are among the strictest in the country on this distinction. If the value of business assets in your home office exceeds a certain threshold, a policy amendment or a separate commercial policy rider may be required. Discovering this distinction after a loss is the most common way people find out.

Protection Specification

Confirm with your broker or carrier whether your residential policy covers your home office business assets at their current value. If it does not, a commercial coverage amendment or a dedicated business safe meeting the commercial policy’s safe rating requirement closes the gap. The safe specification depends entirely on what your carrier requires.

03Why the Safe Deposit Box Is No Longer the Answer

The Safe Deposit Box Is Disappearing. Home Storage Is the Replacement.

The national banking network contracted by roughly 15% between 2017 and 2025. Major banks have been steadily reducing or eliminating safe deposit box services. An estimated 8 million Americans used these services. If you stored precious metals, seed phrase backups, or important documents in a bank box, you may have already been displaced or may be preemptively looking for what comes next.

The case for home storage over bank storage has gotten stronger as access has gotten harder. A quality home safe is available on your schedule, not the branch’s. It does not depend on a branch staying open. And a safe purchased today can last 20 to 30 years with basic maintenance. The transition is less complicated than most people expect. We make it on a regular basis for Bay Area clients who need help calibrating the right spec for what they were storing.

04Why the Bay Area Makes This Harder

Bay Area Buyers Face Three Factors That Change the Spec.

The Bay Area concentration of tech-sector home offices, crypto holdings, and precious metals investors is higher than anywhere else in Norcal’s footprint. That concentration comes with three specific factors that affect the protection specification.

Three Bay Area Factors

Insurance carrier strictness. Bay Area carriers apply residential and commercial safe rating requirements that are among the strictest in the country. What’s adequate in Sacramento may not satisfy a Bay Area policy.

Asset density. The $1.49M Bay Area median home value reflects the broader high-asset environment. Organized crews operating in the region target asset density, not neighborhood poverty indicators.

Crypto and metals concentration. Silicon Valley and the Peninsula have the highest per-capita density of hardware wallet holders and precious metals investors in NorCal. This is the primary market for all three personas on this page.

What It Means for Your Purchase

Confirm your carrier’s safe rating requirement before you purchase. In many Bay Area residential policies, the rating minimum for valuables coverage is higher than the national standard and higher than what most residential safe buyers would choose without guidance.

For precious metals holdings above roughly $25,000, the Bay Area asset density context argues for TL-15 rather than RSC I. For crypto seed phrase backup, the fire class spec is the same anywhere. For home office professionals, the carrier distinction matters significantly more here than in most US markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crypto, Metals & Home Office Questions, Answered

Where should I keep my crypto seed phrase?

Your seed phrase backup, whether written on paper or engraved on metal, should be stored in a fire-rated safe with a Class 350 rating, which maintains the interior below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for the rated duration. Paper ignites at 451 degrees Fahrenheit, so Class 350 provides a meaningful margin for paper document protection. If you also store your hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor, or similar), that device is electronic and requires Class 125 protection, which holds the interior below 125 degrees. The safest approach is either a Class 125 media-rated safe for both, or a Class 350 safe for the paper backup, with the hardware wallet stored separately.

What safe do I need for gold and silver at home?

The right safe for precious metals depends on your total holdings value. For holdings under roughly $25,000, a quality RSC I or RSC II residential safe with floor anchoring provides meaningful protection. Between $25,000 and $100,000, RSC II is the minimum, and TL-15 is worth serious consideration. Above $100,000, TL-15 to TL-30 is the appropriate range depending on your specific threat environment and insurance carrier requirements. Bay Area insurance carriers are among the strictest in the country on residential safe rating requirements for valuables, so confirming your carrier’s specific threshold before purchase is important.

Does my home insurance cover business assets in a home office safe?

Residential policies are written to cover household contents. Business assets held in a home office, computers, professional equipment, client files, or IP, may fall outside residential coverage above certain value thresholds. Bay Area carriers in particular draw this distinction more strictly than most US markets. If the combined value of business assets in your home office exceeds your residential policy’s business property sub-limit, a commercial policy rider or a separate commercial policy is required to cover them. The fastest way to find out is to read your policy’s business property language or call your broker directly.
