Matching what you are protecting to the right class, Class 350, 150, or 125, is the decision that determines whether your photos and digital files actually survive.
Start with the blunt answer. Then the three classes, and what to actually buy.
A standard fire safe holds its interior below 350°F. USB drives fail at 120–150°F. Photographs degrade at 150°F. A safe that survived a fire with your documents intact may have held at 280°F throughout, protecting the paper and destroying everything else stored alongside it. The rating worked exactly as designed. The problem is that the Class 350 standard was designed for one specific content type: paper.
Match your content type to the right class before any other decision. The fire rating you need is determined entirely by what you are storing.
Most buyers do not need a second safe, they need a backup strategy. Start with what you are actually protecting.

Document & Media SafesA standard Class 350 fire safe will not reliably protect USB drives. Flash storage begins to degrade at 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, well below the 350 degree threshold. The safe will protect your paper documents. It will likely destroy your USB drive in any sustained fire event. A Class 125 media-rated safe is the correct product for digital storage protection.
A standard Class 350 fire safe will not reliably protect photographs. Color prints begin degrading around 150 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam environment inside the safe compounds the damage. Protecting photographs requires a Class 150 or Class 125 media-rated safe.
A Class 350 safe holds its interior below 350 degrees Fahrenheit, protecting paper documents. A Class 125 safe holds its interior below 125 degrees Fahrenheit, below the failure threshold for digital storage, photographs, and flash media. Class 125 safes have significantly more insulation and are purpose-built for media protection.
You can, but a Class 350 safe will protect the documents and not the photos. If you want both protected in the same unit, the safe must be rated Class 150 for photographs or Class 125 for digital files. Class 150 protects both paper and analog media. Class 125 protects paper, photos, and digital storage.
For digital files with digital copies, cloud backup is often more reliable and less expensive than a second media safe. For original analog content with no digital equivalent, original film negatives, irreplaceable physical prints, a Class 150 media safe is the right answer. A second safe is not required for files that can be backed up off-site digitally.
