In November 2018, the Camp Fire destroyed Paradise, California, the most destructive wildfire in California history to that date. One of our customers lost their entire home. What remained when we helped recover their belongings weeks later was their Liberty fire-rated safe, and everything inside it.
The outcome was not luck. It was the result of specific decisions made years before the fire.
The safe was a Liberty model with a UL 72 verified fire rating, placed on a concrete slab in the garage. The structure around it burned completely. The safe sat in the ash field for approximately 14 hours before temperatures in the area stabilized enough for it to begin cooling.
When we opened it, the documents were intact. The photographs were intact. The firearm was intact. What produced that outcome was two decisions working together, an adequate fire rating and deliberate placement. The rating gave the safe a thermal budget. The placement let the budget work.

The Camp Fire is one data point from a pattern we have seen across the Tubbs Fire, the Glass Fire, and 30 years of NorCal wildfire replacement work. The safes that hold are consistently on concrete foundations, away from secondary fuel sources, in positions where they can begin cooling once the main fire passes. The ones that fail have one of those variables missing.

Cleared fuel within ten feet. The firewood stored nearby is exactly the kind of secondary fuel that turns a survivable event into a total loss.
In High and Very High FHSZ zones, position the safe toward the interior, away from vegetation-facing exterior walls where the heat load is greatest.

For properties in elevated FHSZ zones, High or Very High, a 90 to 150-minute minimum from a UL 72 or ETL verified test is the recommended floor. Concrete foundation placement is equally important. A 30-minute manufacturer-rated safe is insufficient for the sustained thermal exposure of a NorCal wildfire event.
