Most people picture a house fire as a complete loss, everything burned. The reality is more precise, and understanding that precision is what determines whether your most important items survive.

The items people protect most are not all equal in their fire vulnerability. Here is what the physics looks like for each one.

A safe that successfully protected your paper documents may deliver photographs that are damaged or destroyed.

This is where standard fire ratings fall short most often. USB drives, hard drives, SD cards, and optical discs fail at 125 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. A standard residential safe rated to Class 350 does not protect digital media. The contents can be destroyed while the safe is still technically "within its fire rating."
If you are protecting irreplaceable digital archives, a media-rated safe is the right product. Cloud backup for digital files is also a practical complement. It survives any local event entirely.
Steel firearms generally survive house fires. The components that are most vulnerable are polymer parts, optics, and finishes, which can degrade in the 300 to 400 degree range. A firearm that has been through a fire should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use, even if it appears intact.
Ammunition stored in a safe during a fire is a specific consideration. Modern smokeless powder can self-ignite above roughly 350 to 400 degrees internal temperature. Ammunition in a fire-rated safe at a reasonable rating level should not reach that threshold during the rated period, but placement and rating both matter here.
Cash is paper, so the same 350-degree threshold applies. A standard fire-rated safe protects currency adequately. The larger consideration for cash is that a rated safe should not be your primary financial storage. Currency in a safe earns nothing, and for significant amounts, a financial institution is the appropriate home.
Gold and platinum survive house-fire temperatures comfortably. They require temperatures well above 1,800 degrees to melt. What is vulnerable is everything else: settings, prong work, certain gemstones, and organic materials like pearls and opals. Pearls and opals can be destroyed at moderate temperatures, well below what a rated safe would see during its rated duration.
A house fire and a wildfire are different events for a safe. A typical residential house fire burns for a few hours, peaks in intensity, and is largely extinguished by fire response. Wildfire exposure is different: an exterior fire front can expose a safe to sustained high heat for many hours, sometimes with no suppression response during that window.
We have seen this directly with customers from the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise and the 2017 Tubbs Fire near Santa Rosa. One customer's fire-rated safe sat in the ashes for 14 hours, and the contents survived. Placement, an interior room away from exterior walls, was part of why. Rating alone does not tell the whole story when the event is a wildfire.
CAL FIRE released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for Sacramento, Amador, and Calaveras counties in early 2025, the first major remapping in over a decade.
