How long the safe held below its class ceiling during the test, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes. A bigger number is meaningless without the class and the verifier.
Who conducted the test: a UL 72 independent laboratory, ETL accredited testing, or the manufacturer testing their own product. This is what separates a certified rating from a claim.
In a standard suburban house fire, a 30-minute Class 350 manufacturer-rated safe may provide adequate protection for paper documents, if fire-department response is fast and the fire is contained.
In a wildfire, the primary fire scenario for homes in El Dorado Hills, Auburn, Placerville, Grass Valley, Nevada City, and the Sacramento foothills, the exposure is fundamentally different. Wildfires create sustained exterior thermal loading over hours, not minutes. A rating that is acceptable in a suburban kitchen-fire scenario can be well below adequate for a wildfire-exposed structure.
The manufacturer set the test temperature and protocol. The duration number says nothing about how severe the test was.
An independent lab ran a documented, hotter fire profile and verified the interior held. Same minutes, far more rigorous.

How Ratings Are TestedNo. Every fire safe has an interior temperature threshold and a duration limit. When either is exceeded the safe fails. The correct term is fire-rated, and the relevant questions are what interior temperature ceiling the safe holds, for how long, and whether that was independently verified.
Fire-rated means the safe was tested and certified to hold its interior below a specific temperature ceiling for a specific duration. The most rigorous certification is UL 72, which uses a documented fire profile and independent laboratory testing.
Fireproof implies immunity to fire damage, which no safe provides. Fire-resistant describes a product that slows heat transfer and limits interior temperature rise for a rated duration. All legitimate fire safes are fire-resistant, never fireproof.
It depends on the specific rating. Common UL 72 certified ratings range from 30 minutes to 2 hours or more at 350 degrees Fahrenheit interior. The rated duration is the time the interior stayed below the class threshold in a standardized test, not a guarantee for all real-world fires.
First: what is the temperature class, 350, 150, or 125 degrees Fahrenheit? Second: what is the rated duration, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes? Third: who verified it, a UL 72 laboratory, ETL, or manufacturer self-certification? All three together define what the rating actually means.
