No safe is fireproof. Every fire safe is fire-rated, which means it is certified to hold its interior below a specific temperature, for a specific duration, under a specific testing protocol. When those conditions are exceeded, the safe fails. The term “fireproof” describes nothing measurable and certifies nothing verifiable.

The correct question isn't whether a safe is fireproof. It's what three variables define its protection.

Temperature Class

Why This Distinction Matters More in Northern California

In a standard suburban house fire, a 30-minute Class 350 manufacturer-rated safe may provide adequate protection for paper documents, if fire-department response is fast and the fire is contained.

In a wildfire, the primary fire scenario for homes in El Dorado Hills, Auburn, Placerville, Grass Valley, Nevada City, and the Sacramento foothills, the exposure is fundamentally different. Wildfires create sustained exterior thermal loading over hours, not minutes. A rating that is acceptable in a suburban kitchen-fire scenario can be well below adequate for a wildfire-exposed structure.
