Every brand in our lineup has a specific job. Liberty is the dominant residential choice. AMSEC covers TL-rated protection that Liberty doesn't reach. Vaultek owns the quick-access category. Fort Knox is for buyers who want to specify protection directly. Here is the honest assessment.
Thirty years as Liberty's #1 Northern California dealer doesn't mean we tell every customer to buy Liberty. It means we have earned the credibility to tell you when Liberty is the right answer and when it isn't.

For 30 consecutive years, Norcal Safe and Vault has been Liberty Safe's #1 dealer in Northern California. That is not a marketing claim; it is a measured dealer performance ranking that Liberty tracks annually across every authorized dealer in its network. No other Northern California safe dealer has held that position in the same period.
Kevin grew up in this business. His father, Dan, founded Norcal Safe and Vault 31 years ago, and Kevin took over day-to-day operations after years of working every aspect of the operation. The 30-year Liberty relationship predates Kevin's full-time role and continues through his tenure. That kind of continuity is not an accident; it reflects a dealership that has built genuine Liberty product knowledge across every generation of the Liberty lineup.
A dealer who sells one brand for 30 years at that volume accumulates something manufacturers' own websites cannot provide: the knowledge of what the product does in real homes, in real fires, and against real burglary scenarios, across 100,000-plus Northern California installations. That is the credential behind every brand statement in this assessment.
The reason Norcal Safe and Vault carries AMSEC, Fort Knox, and Vaultek alongside Liberty is not brand strategy; it is product honesty. Liberty builds excellent residential safes across a wide range of prices and protection tiers. Liberty does not manufacture TL-rated safes at the commercial and high-residential tier where AMSEC operates. Liberty does not specialize in quick-access biometric products the way Vaultek does. Liberty is not a configurable specification product, the way Fort Knox is. Serving buyers whose situations require those capabilities requires carrying those brands.
The assessment that follows is the one no manufacturer's website can publish: when the Norcal Safe and Vault team recommends each brand, and when they recommend something else.
These are the assessments they give in the showroom. They are honest about what each brand does well and where it hands off to another brand.
Best for: The majority of Northern California residential buyers. If you are protecting firearms, documents, and personal property at the standard to premium residential tier, Liberty is where we start the conversation.
Best for: Buyers who trigger any of the three NorCal TL conditions: Bay Area insurance requirement, Sacramento corridor above-average collection value at the RSC II limit, or rural foothill extended response time. Also the right brand for commercial cash management primary safes.
Best for: Bedside home defense quick-access storage, compact apartment and condo primary safes, and any buyer for whom rapid single-hand access in the dark is the primary design goal.
Best for: Buyers whose situation doesn't fit cleanly into a fixed-spec product tier, Bay Area buyers seeking above-RSC residential protection with American manufacturing, and buyers who want to specify the Protector or ArmaKnox configuration for the highest residential security level without a TL-rated commercial product.
Norcal also carries Champion (formerly absorbing Superior), Rhino, Stealth, and Superior at the value residential tier. These brands serve buyers whose budget requires a specific price point and whose protection needs are adequately met by the standard RSC I residential tier. The honest assessment: these brands offer real value at their price point. They are not the brands the Norcal Safe and Vault team recommends when the buyer's situation calls for above-average protection. The Security Level System scores across all brands. A conversation about your specific needs will clarify whether the value-tier brands are appropriate for your situation.
Every safe Norcal Safe and Vault sells has been scored against the same six criteria: steel construction, locking mechanism, fire protection, build density, certification, and additional security features. The scores produce a 10-level scale from Level 1 (basic security) through Level 10 (apex security). Every brand assessment in this guide corresponds directly to positions on that scale.
The practical implication is that you can compare a Liberty Colonial to an AMSEC BFS Series using the same criteria without translating between incompatible manufacturer rating systems. The Colonial scores at Level 4 (8.94). The AMSEC BFS scores at Level 9 (14.5). The scale makes clear what the raw specifications obscure: these are not comparable products, and the difference between them is a matter of protection tier, not just brand preference.
The Security Level System is the quantitative backbone behind the narrative brand assessments on this page. If you want the full scored framework, including where every model in the lineup sits on the 10-level scale, that is covered in the companion guide.
Standard residential protection tier.
TL-rated high-security tier.
Understanding what a specialty dealer does not carry is as useful as knowing what they do carry. A dealer who carries everything has made no quality judgments. A dealer with a curated lineup has.
Norcal does not carry the brands that dominate big-box retail and general online search: Cannon, Stack-On, and similar entry-level brands that are sold primarily on price and gun capacity claims. This is not because those brands are fraudulent; it is because the construction quality, fire testing, and security ratings at that price tier do not meet the standard of what we are willing to sell and recommend. A buyer who purchases one of those products after a conversation at Norcal Safe and Vault would be trading down on every dimension we care about.
The brands we carry represent our judgment about what products we can stand behind in a service relationship that extends 31 years. Every brand in the lineup has a warranty service path, a quality standard we have verified through product knowledge and installation experience, and a place in our protection framework that we can explain honestly. If a brand does not meet that bar, it is not in the showroom.
Norcal carries Liberty Safe, AMSEC (American Security), Vaultek, Fort Knox, Champion, Rhino, Stealth, and Superior as the primary lineup. The selection reflects 31 years of product knowledge across more than 100,000 Northern California installations. Each brand has a specific role: Liberty covers the standard through premium residential range, AMSEC covers TL-rated residential and commercial, Vaultek covers quick-access and biometric, and Fort Knox covers configured high-security residential.
Yes. Liberty has been Norcal's #1 brand for 30 consecutive years for a reason: the residential lineup is the broadest available, the fire protection holds up consistently across model tiers, and the construction quality is strong throughout the line. The most important variable when buying Liberty is model tier; an entry-level Centurion is a different product from a Presidential. The brand quality is consistent; the model tiers determine the protection level.
Liberty and AMSEC serve different tiers. Liberty covers the standard through an advanced residential range (Levels 2 through 8 on the Norcal Security Level System). AMSEC covers the TL-rated residential and commercial tier (Levels 9 and 10). For residential buyers below the TL threshold, Liberty is the stronger choice. For buyers whose insurance carrier requires TL-rated protection or whose collection value and threat profile reach the TL tier, AMSEC is the brand Norcal Safe and Vault recommends.
No single brand covers every protection tier adequately. Liberty does not manufacture TL-rated safes. Vaultek is specifically built for the quick-access category in a way that standard gun safe brands are not. Fort Knox's configurable construction allows precision matching to specific protection tiers. Carrying multiple brands means that we can recommend the right product for the situation rather than fitting every buyer into one manufacturer's lineup.
The right brand depends on the protection tier you need. For standard to premium residential protection, Liberty is the most thoroughly tested and consistently constructed brand in the category. For TL-rated residential or commercial, AMSEC. For quick-access and biometric products, Vaultek. For a configured high-security residential, Fort Knox starts at Level 7 on the Norcal Safe and Vault Security Level System. Brand is the last question; protection tier is the first.
We carry up to 1,000 safes in stock across our West Sacramento and San Jose showrooms, representing the full Liberty, AMSEC, Fort Knox, and Vaultek lineup. Seeing a Level 4 Liberty Colonial next to a Level 9 AMSEC BFS in person makes the tier difference concrete in a way no specification sheet does. Come in with your situation, and we can walk you to the right conversation in about 15 minutes.
