The Brand Lineup

We Have Sold Liberty Safes for 30 Consecutive Years. Here's Why We Also Sell AMSEC, Fort Knox, and Vaultek.

Every brand in our lineup has a specific job. Liberty is the dominant residential choice. AMSEC covers TL-rated protection that Liberty doesn't reach. Vaultek owns the quick-access category. Fort Knox is for buyers who want to specify protection directly. Here is the honest assessment.

Thirty years as Liberty's #1 Northern California dealer doesn't mean we tell every customer to buy Liberty. It means we have earned the credibility to tell you when Liberty is the right answer and when it isn't.

Or call to talk it through: West Sacramento (916) 372-7677 · San Jose (408) 559-7233

01Why Norcal Carries Multiple Brands

What 30 Years as Liberty's #1 NorCal Dealer Actually Means

For 30 consecutive years, Norcal Safe and Vault has been Liberty Safe's #1 dealer in Northern California. That is not a marketing claim; it is a measured dealer performance ranking that Liberty tracks annually across every authorized dealer in its network. No other Northern California safe dealer has held that position in the same period.

Kevin grew up in this business. His father, Dan, founded Norcal Safe and Vault 31 years ago, and Kevin took over day-to-day operations after years of working every aspect of the operation. The 30-year Liberty relationship predates Kevin's full-time role and continues through his tenure. That kind of continuity is not an accident; it reflects a dealership that has built genuine Liberty product knowledge across every generation of the Liberty lineup.

A dealer who sells one brand for 30 years at that volume accumulates something manufacturers' own websites cannot provide: the knowledge of what the product does in real homes, in real fires, and against real burglary scenarios, across 100,000-plus Northern California installations. That is the credential behind every brand statement in this assessment.

The reason Norcal Safe and Vault carries AMSEC, Fort Knox, and Vaultek alongside Liberty is not brand strategy; it is product honesty. Liberty builds excellent residential safes across a wide range of prices and protection tiers. Liberty does not manufacture TL-rated safes at the commercial and high-residential tier where AMSEC operates. Liberty does not specialize in quick-access biometric products the way Vaultek does. Liberty is not a configurable specification product, the way Fort Knox is. Serving buyers whose situations require those capabilities requires carrying those brands.

The assessment that follows is the one no manufacturer's website can publish: when the Norcal Safe and Vault team recommends each brand, and when they recommend something else.

02The Brand-by-Brand Assessment

When the Norcal Team Recommends Each Brand, and Why

These are the assessments they give in the showroom. They are honest about what each brand does well and where it hands off to another brand.

Primary Dealer · 30 Consecutive Years · #1 NorCal

Liberty Safe

Security Levels 2 – 8

Best for: The majority of Northern California residential buyers. If you are protecting firearms, documents, and personal property at the standard to premium residential tier, Liberty is where we start the conversation.

Strengths
  • The broadest residential lineup available: entry through premium, every capacity, every price tier
  • Fire protection at the residential level is consistently the strongest in the category. Liberty's fire ratings hold up across independent testing as well as manufacturer certification
  • Made in the USA with consistent construction quality across the model lineup
  • Liberty's UL listed electronic locks are among the best-tested residential lock assemblies available
  • The depth of service, parts availability, and warranty support after 30 years of primary-dealer relationship is genuinely different from what a new Liberty dealer provides
Honest Limits
  • Liberty does not manufacture TL-rated safes; buyers who need TL-15 or TL-30 protection need to move to AMSEC
  • Entry-level Liberty models (Centurion, Freedom) are adequately constructed but represent the low end of the lineup; do not confuse the brand quality with the model tier
  • Liberty's gun capacity claims on lower models are optimistic; budget for about 60% of the stated capacity with scopes mounted
Top-Dealer Relationship · TL-Rated Residential & Commercial

AMSEC (American Security)

Security Levels 9 – 10

Best for: Buyers who trigger any of the three NorCal TL conditions: Bay Area insurance requirement, Sacramento corridor above-average collection value at the RSC II limit, or rural foothill extended response time. Also the right brand for commercial cash management primary safes.

Strengths
  • The TL-15 and TL-30 residential product line has no Liberty equivalent. AMSEC owns the residential TL tier in Norcal's lineup
  • AMSEC's commercial electronic lock multi-user and audit-trail capabilities are stronger than any residential-focused brand
  • The BFS, CEV, CF, and CFX series are the products the Norcal Safe and Vault team recommends for Bay Area buyers triggering insurance TL requirements and for rural NorCal properties with extended response times
  • Construction quality at the TL tier reflects the engineering investment; these are genuinely different products from residential RSC safes in a way the price difference reflects accurately
Honest Limits
  • AMSEC's residential combination safe lineup (below TL) is adequate but not distinctive. Liberty is a better choice at equivalent price points in the residential non-TL range
  • TL-rated products start at approximately $4,000 to $8,000; the price point is real and reflects what the protection costs to build
  • AMSEC has a smaller visible retail footprint than Liberty; buyers doing online research see less AMSEC content, which can create a false impression about brand quality relative to availability
Top-Dealer Relationship · Quick-Access & Biometric Category Leader

Vaultek

Security Levels 2 – 4

Best for: Bedside home defense quick-access storage, compact apartment and condo primary safes, and any buyer for whom rapid single-hand access in the dark is the primary design goal.

Strengths
  • Vaultek builds the best consumer-grade quick-access safe on the market. The biometric plus keypad backup configuration, the construction quality, and the reliability are meaningfully above the Amazon-only brands
  • Their multi-user enrollment and app connectivity features add practical value without sacrificing the core access-speed job
  • California DOJ-listed products for the models that apply, which matters for households with children in California
  • Vaultek is the brand Norcal Safe and Vault recommends first for bedside quick-access handgun storage and for compact primary safes where the quick-access form factor matches the use case
Honest Limits
  • Vaultek does not replace a full-size gun safe for primary collection storage; the security rating and fire protection in the Vaultek line are appropriate to the quick-access category, not to primary secure storage of a full collection
  • The compact and quick-access form factor is a deliberate design choice, not a limitation to overcome; if the need is primary collection storage, Vaultek is not the right brand
Configured Protection · USA-Made · Security Level Starts at 7

Fort Knox

Security Levels 7 – 10, by configuration

Best for: Buyers whose situation doesn't fit cleanly into a fixed-spec product tier, Bay Area buyers seeking above-RSC residential protection with American manufacturing, and buyers who want to specify the Protector or ArmaKnox configuration for the highest residential security level without a TL-rated commercial product.

Strengths
  • Heavy domestic steel platform as the base for every product; the construction foundation is stronger than most fixed-spec residential brands at the same price
  • The configurable model means buyers whose protection requirements sit between standard model specifications can specify the protection level directly, rather than choosing the nearest fixed product
  • Fort Knox's Protector line with ArmaKnox liner upgrades places it in the L9 to L10 range, competitive with AMSEC at the residential high-security tier
  • The fastest-growing product line in the Norcal Safe and Vault lineup, particularly in the Bay Area, where high-security residential configurations are increasingly sought
Honest Limits
  • Fort Knox cannot be scored as a fixed entry in the Security Level System; a base configuration enters at Level 7, and the final level depends on what the buyer specifies
  • The configurability that makes Fort Knox powerful for the right buyer also makes online research less straightforward; a Fort Knox comparison requires a conversation about the specific configuration, not just the model name
  • Fort Knox does not have Liberty's depth of entry-level and mid-tier residential product options below Level 7; Liberty is the stronger brand choice there
The Value-Tier Brands · Champion, Rhino, Stealth, Superior

Norcal also carries Champion (formerly absorbing Superior), Rhino, Stealth, and Superior at the value residential tier. These brands serve buyers whose budget requires a specific price point and whose protection needs are adequately met by the standard RSC I residential tier. The honest assessment: these brands offer real value at their price point. They are not the brands the Norcal Safe and Vault team recommends when the buyer's situation calls for above-average protection. The Security Level System scores across all brands. A conversation about your specific needs will clarify whether the value-tier brands are appropriate for your situation.

03The Norcal Security Level System

How Every Brand in the Lineup Maps to the Norcal Security Level System

Every safe Norcal Safe and Vault sells has been scored against the same six criteria: steel construction, locking mechanism, fire protection, build density, certification, and additional security features. The scores produce a 10-level scale from Level 1 (basic security) through Level 10 (apex security). Every brand assessment in this guide corresponds directly to positions on that scale.

The practical implication is that you can compare a Liberty Colonial to an AMSEC BFS Series using the same criteria without translating between incompatible manufacturer rating systems. The Colonial scores at Level 4 (8.94). The AMSEC BFS scores at Level 9 (14.5). The scale makes clear what the raw specifications obscure: these are not comparable products, and the difference between them is a matter of protection tier, not just brand preference.

The Security Level System is the quantitative backbone behind the narrative brand assessments on this page. If you want the full scored framework, including where every model in the lineup sits on the 10-level scale, that is covered in the companion guide.

Liberty Colonial
Level 4score 8.94

Standard residential protection tier.

AMSEC BFS Series
Level 9score 14.5

TL-rated high-security tier.

04What Norcal Does Not Carry

What We Don't Sell and What That Tells You

Understanding what a specialty dealer does not carry is as useful as knowing what they do carry. A dealer who carries everything has made no quality judgments. A dealer with a curated lineup has.

Norcal does not carry the brands that dominate big-box retail and general online search: Cannon, Stack-On, and similar entry-level brands that are sold primarily on price and gun capacity claims. This is not because those brands are fraudulent; it is because the construction quality, fire testing, and security ratings at that price tier do not meet the standard of what we are willing to sell and recommend. A buyer who purchases one of those products after a conversation at Norcal Safe and Vault would be trading down on every dimension we care about.

The brands we carry represent our judgment about what products we can stand behind in a service relationship that extends 31 years. Every brand in the lineup has a warranty service path, a quality standard we have verified through product knowledge and installation experience, and a place in our protection framework that we can explain honestly. If a brand does not meet that bar, it is not in the showroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About the Norcal Brand Lineup

What brands of safes does Norcal carry?

Norcal carries Liberty Safe, AMSEC (American Security), Vaultek, Fort Knox, Champion, Rhino, Stealth, and Superior as the primary lineup. The selection reflects 31 years of product knowledge across more than 100,000 Northern California installations. Each brand has a specific role: Liberty covers the standard through premium residential range, AMSEC covers TL-rated residential and commercial, Vaultek covers quick-access and biometric, and Fort Knox covers configured high-security residential.

Is Liberty a good, safe brand?

Yes. Liberty has been Norcal's #1 brand for 30 consecutive years for a reason: the residential lineup is the broadest available, the fire protection holds up consistently across model tiers, and the construction quality is strong throughout the line. The most important variable when buying Liberty is model tier; an entry-level Centurion is a different product from a Presidential. The brand quality is consistent; the model tiers determine the protection level.

How does AMSEC compare to Liberty?

Liberty and AMSEC serve different tiers. Liberty covers the standard through an advanced residential range (Levels 2 through 8 on the Norcal Security Level System). AMSEC covers the TL-rated residential and commercial tier (Levels 9 and 10). For residential buyers below the TL threshold, Liberty is the stronger choice. For buyers whose insurance carrier requires TL-rated protection or whose collection value and threat profile reach the TL tier, AMSEC is the brand Norcal Safe and Vault recommends.

Why does Norcal carry multiple safe brands?

No single brand covers every protection tier adequately. Liberty does not manufacture TL-rated safes. Vaultek is specifically built for the quick-access category in a way that standard gun safe brands are not. Fort Knox's configurable construction allows precision matching to specific protection tiers. Carrying multiple brands means that we can recommend the right product for the situation rather than fitting every buyer into one manufacturer's lineup.

What is the best safe brand?

The right brand depends on the protection tier you need. For standard to premium residential protection, Liberty is the most thoroughly tested and consistently constructed brand in the category. For TL-rated residential or commercial, AMSEC. For quick-access and biometric products, Vaultek. For a configured high-security residential, Fort Knox starts at Level 7 on the Norcal Safe and Vault Security Level System. Brand is the last question; protection tier is the first.
