Safe installations above a certain weight are not scaled-up versions of standard residential delivery. They are categorically different operations, with different equipment, longer planning timelines, and in some cases permits and coordination with city and county agencies. 02The Cannonball Safe

5,632 Pounds, 40 Marble Stairs, One Solution

The safe was 120 years old and weighed 5,632 pounds. It had been installed in an interior vault within a historic property and needed to be moved to street level. The problem was the access route: 40 marble stairs stood between the safe and the street.

Safe handling companies that encountered the scope of this project and declined were not wrong to decline. Moving 5,632 pounds down 40 marble stairs requires custom rigging, a crane operation at street level, and months of coordination with city and county agencies for permits, traffic control, and the crane staging area. Most safe installation companies do not have that project management capability. We do.

The project took months from initial assessment to execution. The rigging plan for the stair descent, the crane positioning at street level, the traffic control, and the building protection protocols were all developed before any equipment touched the safe. When execution day came, the safe moved from the interior vault to the street without a mark on the building or the stairs.

03What Changes Above 1,500 Pounds

Four Differences That Change the Entire Operation

Weight Beyond Standard Equipment

Standard delivery equipment manages most residential safes up to roughly 1,500 to 2,000 pounds through standard doorways. Above that in constrained spaces, the safe cannot move through residential entry points conventionally. Crane lifts, telehandler positioning, and industrial rigging become the tools.

Access That Breaks Residential Rules

A 3,000-pound safe may not fit through any residential doorway in a conventional orientation. Many heavy installs use a non-standard approach: removing a window, a wall section, a garage bay opening, or an exterior crane placement. The access method is part of the plan before the safe moves.

Structural Assessment

A slab that supports a 600-pound safe may need evaluation before a 4,000-pound TL safe sits on it. At roughly 2,500 to 3,000 pounds and above, assessment of the floor system, load path, and foundation is standard. Any reinforcement, a concrete pad, joist support, or a steel beam, goes in before the safe arrives.

Standard deliveries are scheduled days to weeks out. Heavy installations begin planning weeks to months before the date. Site assessment, structural review, equipment staging, permit applications, and team coordination are distinct phases in a project timeline, not same-day decisions.

Why Most Dealers Decline Projects at This Scale

The Information That Moves the Project Forward

A heavy installation consultation begins with a description of the safe and the location. The more specific the information, the faster we can give you an accurate scope and timeline.

The Safe

Make, model if known, approximate age, and weight or dimensions. For legacy safes, photographs of the front, back, and sides. Weight is the most important single number.

The Current Location

Floor type, which floor of the building, and the access route from the safe's current position to where it needs to go. Photos of the staircase, hallways, and any doorways or openings on the path.

The Destination

Where the safe is going and what the access looks like at that end. If it is a new address, the same information for the destination property.

Any Known Constraints

Historic property restrictions, HOA limitations, building management requirements, or previous assessments that indicated the installation was not feasible.
